City announce 2nd new role showing commitment to sharing the club’s journey
Bath City are pleased to announce that Dave Phillips has been appointed to a new full-time role as the club’s official videographer. Dave has been a volunteer behind the camera for many years, putting in many hours to produce video content of the highest standard.
Executive Chair Andrew Stalbow explained the thinking behind Dave’s appointment; “Dave has excelled as a volunteer videographer, and the quality of Bath City’s video work is of a Premier League standard. We’re thrilled to be able to offer Dave a full-time role that allows him to follow his passions. This is a very strategic hire for us – we want to enable all of our supporters, partners, investors in Bath, the UK and around the world, to join the journey with us, and Dave and team will be capturing the key moments on and off the pitch as we share the stories of a club working hard to unlock its potential.”
Dave is a very familiar face to all City fans so we took this opportunity to ask him about some of his favourite memories of players and matches over the years. Hopefully these will spark some great memories for all Romans too.
What’s the first match you can remember attending?
I can’t remember the specific fixture, but it’ll have been around 1993. My childhood friend’s Granddad took us both down to Twerton Park after we’d seen City’s result on the Grandstand vidiprinter the week before. Somehow, I still vividly remember being completely fascinated by our keeper being called ‘Mogg the Cat’ at the expense of watching the game (what a ‘keeper he was by the way).
What’s been your favourite game at Twerton Park?
There have been so many, it’s hard to pick one out.
The Woking play off final is an obvious choice.
Luton Town in 2010/11, no goals but I managed to meet a teenage crush in Cerys Matthews.
I’ll go for Chippenham on Boxing Day a few seasons back and seeing Alex Fletcher heroically walk out onto the Twerton pitch again.
What’s your most memorable away game?
Again, so many. Behind the camera, Halesowen roughly 20 years ago last month sticks out right now having watched it back last week, a topsy-turvy 4-3 win early in our title winning season, memorable for an incredible Scott Partridge goal: A Cruyff turn and finish into the top corner on his weaker foot.
Chelmsford away in the playoff semi-final in 2010 also. Despite being 3-0 up on aggregate in the second half and the hosts down to ten men, it was by far the most paralysed with nausea and nerves I’ve ever been filming City, a strange but brilliant feeling.
On the terraces, the win at Bristol Rovers in the Trophy, Barnet in the Cup, and Dover Athletic in 2013 (IYKYK).
Who’s your favourite ex-Bath City player and why?
The GOAT. Sir. James. Stuart. Rollo. No words can do the great man justice. Statue overdue.
Notable mentions, the ‘Golden Mullet’ Tom Smith, and a pair of ‘absolute Rolls Royces’ in Alex Russell and Chas Hemmings.
Do you support any other football teams or are you a one club man?
I loosely follow Houston Dynamo in MLS for weird reasons, as well as getting to as many Cymru home games as possible when the City aren’t playing.
Calcio Lecco too, of course. As Jack Shephard wisely said, we have to go back!
Desert island goals – if you could only watch 3 BCFC goals on repeat, which would they be?
Tough one, let’s go with…
Mark McKeever’s free kick at Newport in the FA Cup, 2007-08. Perfect angle behind it, an unbelievable curler perfectly into the far top corner. Just ridiculously satisfying viewing.
Kaid Mohamed’s last-minute winner at Cambridge United, slaloming through 4 or 5 defenders and burying it.
Adam Connolly at Tamworth, flicks the ball over a midfielder’s head with his right shoulder, volleys into the top corner with his left foot from 30+ yards with an inconceivable amount of dip and curve.
What’s your favourite match that you’ve filmed for the club?
An awful, awful match, but probably that Tyler Harvey match for the mad week that followed dealing with various international media.
Is there a blooper reel and can we see it?
I’m not sure if there is much of one to be honest, beyond a few players having to restart interviews after swearing!
Mark Stillman getting in a flap after having his commentary notes and teamsheet sprayed across Bishops’ Stortford’s carpark by a wayward clearance early in a game was darkly funny, (Lampard transition) but in all seriousness what an incredible job he did to improvise for the rest of the match. Mark is an incredibly talented commentator who we’re so lucky to have. Our match coverage just would not be the same without our excellent Radio team.
What does the new role mean for you?
Quite simply being able to do the things I love doing the most, day in-day out!
For over twenty years I’ve been motivated by leaving future City fans the best possible archive of our wonderful Club’s history to look back on and enjoy, so I’m incredibly grateful that Andrew and his team have put their trust in me to help elevate our coverage even further.
I hope everyone enjoys watching what’s to come as much as I know I’ll enjoy helping to create it. UTFC.
