Second half goals secure hard-fought win for Romans at Evesham

Second half goals from Jordan Tillson and Alex Fisher secured a hard-fought 2-0 win for City this evening against Evesham United at The Spiers and Hartwell Stadium.

An early header from Harrison Minturn was pushed to safety by keeper Varney as City started the game brightly. The hosts responded well when Churchley cut inside but saw his shot blocked by the legs of Harvey Wiles-Richards. The clearest chance of the first half fell to City on 25 minutes when Pedro Elawar set up Harry Parsons but he drilled wide with the goal at his mercy. A couple of half chances came and went for both sides in the remainder a low quality opening 45 minutes.

This was forgotten as City went ahead on 52 minutes. Matt Bowman played the ball back to Tillson and his 25-yard shot took a slight deflection off the head of Richards to beat Varney. Evesham reacted well to this blow and enjoyed their best spell of the game. However, they lacked a cutting edge up front and, despite fashioning several promising positions, couldn’t find a leveller. The closest they came was five minutes from time when Wiles-Richards spilled a free-kick but, in the resultant scramble, saw the ball kicked out of his hands before Liggett steered it home. And City made certain of the three points in the final minute. Fisher won possession on the edge of the box and saw his shot blocked by the outstretched arm of Hutt. With regular penalty taker Scott Wilson already substituted Fisher took responsibility and emphatically beat Varney from 12 yards.
