Tigers tame City despite great Wilson strike

City suffered a 3-1 defeat in their latest pre-season outing against Gloucester City at the TigerTurf Stadium this afternoon. With Joe Raynes, Tom Smith, Cody Cooke, Dan Greenslade and Jordan Dyer all missing due to various reasons the Tigers largely controlled the first half and went into the break two goals to the good. The first arrived on 20 minutes when a corner was turned home by a trialist before two minutes from half-time James’ low shot beat Joe Wright. City’s best chance fell to Scott Wilson just past the half-hour mark following a surging run by Chris Lines but he directed his shot to close to the Tigers keeper. The physical home side continued to enjoy the better of the game during the early stages of the second half but City were beginning to pose a greater threat going forward and on 61 minutes looked to have pulled a goal back through Kieran Parselle’s neat finish only for an offside flag against Wilson in the build-up to rule out the strike. And five minutes later Gloucester made it 3-0. Wright did brilliantly to block Mitford’s initial header but was powerless to keep out the same player’s follow up shot. Despite this the Romans were now looking the better side and with 10 minutes left they grabbed a deserved consolation goal through Wilson’s great curling 20 yard shot into the top corner.
