Romans put to the sword by ruthless league leaders Wealdstone

City suffered an afternoon to forgot at Wealdstone today as the league leaders thumped them by seven goals to nil. The game was over as a contest by half-time as the rampant hosts swept into a 3-0 lead. Although City could justifiably complain about the award of the two free-kicks and corner that led to the goals they only had themselves to blame for how they dealt with the set-pieces. On 14 minutes the ball was only cleared as far Clifford and his 20-yard shot found the corner of the net. Ten minutes later an unmarked Emmanuel headed toward goal where Frankie Artus could only divert it into his own net. Then three minutes before the interval Stevens’ header had just enough power to beat Ryan Clarke. By contrast City had failed to test Stones keeper Oxborough once and any hopes of a comeback in the second half disappeared as a quickfire Lewis double made it 5-0 by the hour mark. The ruthless home side scored a sixth on 69 minutes with Green’s low shot and completed the rout eleven minutes later as Phillips tapped the ball home after Clarke could only parry Clifford’s show.
