City mark the start of a new era with A4 Derby victory

First half goals from Donovan Wilson and Scott Wilson earned City a well-deserved 2-0 win over Chippenham Town at Cannon Clarke Stadium @ Twerton Park this afternoon. In the first game since the takeover of the club, the Romans were in control from the first whistle and only denied a bigger win by a series of fine saves from Bluebirds keeper Whitchard.

As early as the 10th minute he was called into action, turning away Donovan Wilson’s shot after he was slipped through by Joe Raynes. His next involvement was picking the ball out of his net. Harvey Wiles-Richards 21st minute ball forward was brought down by Donovan Wilson and he held off a defender before knocking it past the keeper and rolling it into the empty net. Four minutes later Whitchard produced his best save of the afternoon, getting his fingertips to Harry Parsons’ 20-yard shot that looked destined for the top corner. City would not be denied a second goal though. Raynes did brilliantly to retain possession down the right and race into the box tight against the touchline before pulling to back to Scott Wilson to divert it home. The one-way traffic continued and it took another smart stop from Whitchard to prevent Pedro Elawar adding a third for City on 37 minutes.

An early second half effort from Parsons, which cleared the bar, showed City would not relinquish their grip on the game as had happened previously this season. Chippenham were seeing slightly more of the ball but were largely restricted to passing it around ineffectively in their own half and as soon as they tried to push forward City would close them down and recover possession. A deserved third goal wouldn’t come though, the overworked Bluebirds no.1 making further saves from Elawar and the impressive Ollie Chamberlain. August Player of the Month Sev Streczen came off the bench and almost capped a lively cameo with a goal, curling a left-foot shot narrowly wide five minutes from time. This was City’s final chance but it capped a great week off the pitch with perfect result on it.
