Match Report by Mark Stillman.

Royal Wootton Bassett Town all but confirmed the league title as they saw off Bath City Women in Wiltshire.

Town know that a point will almost certainly be enough against already relegated Paulton Rovers this Sunday to claim the championship.

They got off to a flier against City when Tori Taylor’s corner inside three minutes appeared to come off Katie Davies last for an own goal.

City levelled with a fine finish. Beth Edwards’ sublime through ball found Emma Vilday, who perfectly lofted over the advanced Millie Powell.

The Romans were undone by another set-piece to gift a second goal. In a near replica to Bassett’s first, Taylor’s corner was blasted home at the back post by Mia Mugford.

Lucy Clay reacted sharply to gather Lauren Bulley’s poke towards goal when another corner caused chaos.

After half-time, Vilday wastefully lashed over when Adella Clarke found her in oceans of space in the penalty area.

They were made to pay when Bassett netted a third just shy of the hour. Elle Scott played the ball through to substitute Megan Young, who squared for Hannah Gulliver to fire home from close range before Clay could get across in time.

The game’s second own goal gifted a way back in for City with Sophie Storey’s near post corner was glanced in by the head of Bassett’s Darcy Cox.

Jasmine Rennie’s attempt was deflected narrowly behind for a corner and Maddy Brown’s curler from 20 yards cannoned against the bar as City pushed for an equaliser, while dogged defending prevented the home side increasing their advantage.

However Matt Abreu’s side couldn’t find a third as they suffered an eighth defeat this season, six of them by the odd goal.

City’s Line-Up: Clay; Taylor, Gray, Davies, Duffy; Vilday, Fry, Spratt, Rennie; Clarke, B Edwards. Subs used: Evans, Brown, Trivett, Storey, Moran.

Scorers: City – Vilday (13), Own Goal (67); Bassett – Own Goal (3), Mugford (19), Gulliver (58)
