Match Report by Mark Stillman.

Managerless Gosport Borough came from behind to end Bath City’s five game winning run in a pulsating encounter.

Matt Bowman nodded in a third in three games to give the Romans a half-time lead.

But a much-improved second half from the visitors, under player interim boss Rory Williams, saw them secure three points.

Goalkeeper Harvey Wiles-Richards had kept City in it before he was beaten by Kris Campbell’s header, and the keeper almost remarkably rescued a point in the dying seconds.

Bowman and Enzio Boldewijn were restored to the starting XI alongside Reuben Reid, deputising for the injured Donovan Wilson.

Despite 11 days off from matches, City showed no signs of rustiness in the opening 10 minutes.

Bowman planted wide after Gosport failed to clear Jordan Tillson’s corner, James Holden spread himself well to deny Reid after he held off Jerry Wiltshire from Ollie Chamberlain’s pass before Boldewijn’s free-kick flew inches wide with Holden at full stretch.

Having survived those scares, Gosport appeared to have taken a 15th minute lead.

From Campbell’s long throw, George Penn’s excellent finish from 20 yards flew into the bottom corner, but after consulting with assistant Fraser Lewis, referee James Salt adjudged that visiting centre-back Michael Agboola had impeded the keeper’s view in an offside position.

Seven minutes later, Agboola had a hand, literally, in City’s opener.

Under pressure from Reid, the ball brushed the captain’s arm on the edge of the box, and Boldewijn’s free-kick was easily headed home by the unmarked Bowman.

Callum Wood should have made it 2-0 but he headed Pedro Elawar’s cross straight at Holden from six yards.

Gosport had a second goal ruled out, this time with no complaints, as Billy Bodin stabbed home from close range when stood a yard offside.

Agboola’s luckless afternoon ended inside half an hour when he hobbled off, but the visiting defence did enough to force Elawar into a tame effort when he cut inside from Wiles-Richards’ precise drop kick on a counter.

The first attack of the second half led to an equaliser for the Hampshire outfit.

Mauro Vilhete was initially denied by Wiles-Richards, who made himself big to deny the São Tomé and Príncipe international.

From the loose ball, Michael Fernandes crossed to the back post and Bodin, son of former Bath City legend Paul, superbly steered a header in off the inside of the post.

Wiles-Richards had tried to desperately claw the ball away but assistant Billy Wilde flagged for a goal with no complaints.

The impressive Bodin, at League Two Swindon last term, spurned an opportunity just after before Reid was desperately close to putting City ahead again.

Fed through from Harry Parsons, Reid shot low across goal but he struck the woodwork with Jordan Stepney able to hammer clear.

A phenomenal double save from Wiles-Richards left Gosport stunned.

Penn’s shot on the turn by the edge of the box was flicked onto the post and left Bodin with a tap-in, but the City keeper somehow changed direction in time to fling himself in the way and keep it at 1-1.

Holden denied substitute Scott Wilson with his legs with Wiles-Richards following suit to keep out Bodin as his quick feet led to an opening.

Ollie Tomlinson, who received the September Player of the Month award before the game, proved his worth as his block snuffed out Bodin’s goalbound effort before the pressure finally told on 81 minutes.

Play was recycled from a corner and Vilhete’s teasing ball was headed in at the far post by Campbell.

Wilson shot straight at Holden from Reid’s smart lay-off before stunning reflexes from the Boro’ custodian denied Alex Fisher.

The sub beautifully controlled a loose ball in the box and shot in an instant but Holden managed to tip over for a corner.

Isaac Brown spurned two chances for Gosport in added time with Wiles-Richards at the rescue for the second, before City’s best player on the day nearly produced a memorable finish.

Sent forward for the last set-piece of the game, Elawar’s delivery was well met by City’s number one but his header flew over the angle of post and crossbar to conclude a breathless contest.
