Frome Town (0) 1 Bath City (0) 0 – Monday 31 August 2026 – Southern League Premier South – Badgers Hill Stadium
Match Report by Mark Stillman.
George Dowling netted within thirty seconds of coming on as a substitute to consign Bath City to a second straight defeat.
The midfielder’s deflected winner sent the Frome Town players and supporters into ecstasy.
It settled a poor game which seemed destined to finish goalless, as City looked for their maiden away clean sheet of 2026.
But the late intervention settled the first league meeting between the two since 1906 in a bumper crowd at Badgers Hill.
Matt Bowman nearly had City ahead on 63 seconds when Joe Raynes, at the home of his former club, hurled in a long throw which eventually led to the Swiss midfielder firing across goal against the legs of Kyle Phillips.
In response, Jordan Tillson’s half clearance fell to Callum Gould in the box but his effort was deflected well wide, with Albie Hopkins’ curler from the corner headed behind by Dan Greenslade.
Zac Drew, dismissed two days previous for Frome, was cautioned for simulation after throwing himself to the ground from Kieran Parselle’s challenge.
He was one of three Town players cautioned in a bitty first half, distinctly lacking in quality from either side, summed up by Sam Heal slashing well high and wide from 25 yards.
Archie Ferris tapped in long after the whistle went for his foul on Ollie Tomlinson as the half drifted into a predictable goalless conclusion.
Alex Fisher was presented with an decent opportunity just before the hour.
Sam Teale’s wayward pass inside was collected by the striker who deliberately ran slightly wide of goal before his tame left-footer was easily taken by Phillips.
Warren Maidment’s near post corner took a nick off Harry Lucas which nearly caught out Harvey Wiles-Richards, who was grateful to see it just land off target.
It was enough of a warning for Scott Bartlett who made a triple substitution with Scott Wilson, Ollie Chamberlain and Reuben Reid entering the fray.
It made little difference in attack as the Romans failed to combine meaningfully in the final third, and when the did their final ball was wasteful.
Wilson and Bowman failed to force the ball home when Phillips misjudged a Raynes long throw and James Morton’s free-kick was easily taken by the Frome stopper having sneaked through a crowded box.
While City’s treble change didn’t have the desired effect, Frome’s double on 80 minutes certainly did.
Earlier substitute Sam Meakes kept the ball alive following Maidment’s long throw and pulled back for Dowling, who first touch from the bench was a shot from 12 yards which clipped the heels of Greenslade to leave Wiles-Richards wrong-footed.
Parselle came closest to levelling when Raynes’ cross to the back post was met on the stretch, but Phillips stood firm twice to keep him out.
Nothing else materialised for City who failed to score under Bartlett for just a second time.
While the defeat is incomparable to the humiliating FA Cup loss in 1984 when Dave Allen’s double helped the Robins seal a 3-1 success against a side then three divisions higher, it is a loss which will undoubtedly rankle for Bath City fans who are still yet to see their side reach the levels required to live up to their tag as one of the title contenders before the campaign began.
