City miss out on repeat Cup success in penalty shoot-out defeat
City missed out on retaining the Somerset FA Junior Cup this evening in a penalty shoot-out defeat against Weston Super Mare at Brislington FC’s Ironmould Lane. Beth Edwards gave City a deserved first half lead, netting from close range on 41 minutes. Erin Duffy had forced a great save from Holcombe earlier in the half. Then from the resultant corner Adella Clarke’s header was ruled out for an infringement. The Seagulls improved after the break and levelled on the hour mark when Williams raced clear to slot the ball past Lucy Clay. City came the closest to winning the tie in normal time when Abby Gray’s late header flashed narrowly wide but the game went to penalties. Duffy, Mils Bellotti and Clodagh Moran were successful from 12 yards but Jess Evans saw her effort saved by Holcombe. With Weston netting their first four kicks this gave Slater the chance to seal the win but she fired over the bar. However, Nell Bloomfield then also blasted over to end City’s hopes of cup glory.
