Scott Wilson double in vain as Romans end season with home loss

Despite two first half goals from Scott Wilson, City ended their 2025/26 season with defeat as Maidstone United turned the game around in the second half, completing the comeback deep in stoppage time.

Brad Ash had already forced a smart stop from Stones keeper Holden when a 3rd minute Joe Raynes long-throw was only cleared as far as Scott Wilson to lash a volley home from the edge of the box. Charlie Binns saved well from Court on seven minutes before Donovan Wilson flashed a shot narrowly wide. The play-off chasing visitors were enjoying the majority of possession as the first half progressed but City stood firm and two minutes before half-time the Romans doubled their lead. Matt Bowman set up Alex Fisher who saw his initial shot saved but Scott Wilson rifled home the rebound into the roof of the net from 18 yards.

The pattern of the game changed little after the break with Maidstone struggling to create clear chances despite continuing to dominate the game. However, a goal out of nothing on 70 minutes gave them renewed hope. Boruk’s hopeful ball into the box saw Yila beat Binns at his near post. With five minutes left the game was level when City failed to clear a corner and Fowler fired home. Knowing that only victory would give Maidstone a chance of sneaking into the play-offs they threw everything they could at City and in the sixth minute of stoppage time a goalmouth scramble ended with Boruk netting the winning goal. Results elsewhere meant despite the win the visitors missed out on a play-off place by goal difference and City’s National League South tenure ended in a familiar manner with late disappointment.
