City emerge on top in eventful Chesham encounter

City retained the slenderest of grips on their National League South place with a remarkable 4-2 win over play-off chasing Chesham United at Cannon Clarke Stadium @ Twerton Park this afternoon. They raced into a three-goal lead after just 22 minutes but the visitors pulled two goals back before the interval. Both sides were reduced to ten men in the second half but a Scott Wilson penalty ensured it was City who emerged from the game victorious.

There were just 43 seconds on the clock when Joe Raynes fed the ball into Donovan Wilson and he dispatched a low shot into the net from 20 yards. Twelve minutes later Raynes was again the provider as his pass toward Scott Wilson was diverted into his own net by Adebiyi. Then on 22 minutes a neat build-up saw Scott Wilson turn the ball into the path of his cousin and he drilled home a left foot shot for his second and City’s third goal. The Generals got back into the game in the 32nd minute through Bennetts’ neat turn and finish. Three minutes later it 3-2 when Williams’ cross was turned home by Yearn.

The second half started with the post denying Donovan Wilson a hat-trick but on 52 minutes they were awarded a penalty when Young misjudged Alex Fisher’s cross and blocked it with his arm. With Scott Wilson unmarked behind him it was a clear red card and City’s no.9 completed the punishment with a confident spot-kick. The numbers were evened up on 70 minutes when Owen Windsor reacted to being kicked by Roberts off the ball by shoving him to the ground. After consulting his assistant though it was only Windsor who saw red. There were further chances at both ends but no more goals to see the Romans record back to back home wins for the first time this season.
