Bath City (0) 0 Farnborough (0) 1 – Tuesday 10 March 2026 – Enterprise National League South – Cannon Clarke Stadium @ Twerton Park
Match Report by Georgina Morse.
Bath City suffered a late heartbreak at Twerton Park as an 89th-minute goal secured a 1–0 victory for Farnborough. Despite producing an improved performance from Saturday’s heavy defeat in Essex, the Romans were left empty-handed after Jordan Tillson’s late red card and a decisive strike moments later condemned them to an eighth game without the 3 points.
The opening stages saw Farnborough register the first effort on goal inside five minutes, with Alfie Tuck testing the City defence early.
City created sustained pressure through a move involving Scott Wilson, Ruebin Sheppard and Matt Bowman. Working the ball high up the pitch, City claimed successive corners as Farnborough struggled to deal with the pressure. The third corner eventually found Bowman, whose powerful header appeared destined for goal before Farnborough goalkeeper Joe Duncan produced an impressive save to tip the ball onto the crossbar. The Bristol City loanee, making his debut for Farnborough, proved equal to the early threat.
Owen Windsor had a promising opportunity in the 16th minute but fired his effort over the bar. However, another dangerous moment followed when Windsor launched a long throw into the penalty area, causing confusion on the goal line but Farnborough were eventually able to clear their lines.
Just before the half-hour mark, the hosts created another opportunity when Putman surged down the right before linking up with Bowman and Sheppard in a promising three-versus-two situation. Sheppard’s eventual shot, however, lacked power and rolled narrowly wide of the left post.
A late challenge from Alfie Tuck just before half-time initially appeared to earn a second booking and a red card. However, after some confusion the referee clarified that Tuck hadn’t yet been booked, meaning he instead received only a yellow card.
After three minutes of added time and another late corner following a Joe Raynes throw in, the sides went into the break still level.
City started the second half brightly and quickly created another promising moment when Wilson broke forward in a two-versus-one situation. The hosts came agonisingly close to breaking the deadlock moments after when Tillson struck a powerful effort from the edge of the area after Farnborough failed to clear their lines, with the shot saved by the woodwork.
Wesley Fonguck caused problems for the City defence with several dangerous runs, including one attempt to slide a pass through the middle that was well intercepted by the home defence.
A Farnborough free-kick just after the hour mark flashed across the face of goal, reaching the back post where Toby Bower returned the ball towards the far side of the six-yard box. Harvey Wiles-Richards had judged the initial cross to be drifting over, but City’s defenders reacted quickly to prevent a chance.
Soon afterwards, Bower again threatened when he met a pass from Fonguck on the overlap and struck towards goal, the effort deflecting out for a corner. The set-piece caused panic inside the six-yard area before eventually going behind for another corner.
Play was briefly halted in the 72nd minute when Raynes suffered what appeared to be a serious leg injury and was forced to leave the field after hobbling off following treatment.
Despite the setback, the Romans continued to push forward. A loose ball outside the penalty area fell kindly to Luke Russe, who struck a first-time effort that forced Duncan into another save, tipping the ball behind for a corner. The resulting delivery was punched away but recycled back into the area by Putman, allowing Batten to head towards goal and draw yet another stretching save from the Farnborough goalkeeper.
The decisive moment arrived in the 87th minute when Tillson received a second yellow card for a late challenge, reducing the Romans to ten men and giving Farnborough a dangerous free-kick high up the pitch.
From the resulting delivery, Michael Klass headed the ball back across goal and Micah Anthony reacted quickest, taking a touch before drilling a low shot into the bottom-right corner in the 89th minute to give the visitors the lead.
Six minutes of stoppage time followed and a final long throw deep into injury time provided one last opportunity, but Duncan gathered comfortably to secure the win for Farnborough.
For City, it was another painful result despite an improved performance and a match in which they forced several important saves. However, a late lapse ultimately proved costly as Farnborough claimed all three points at Twerton Park. The defeat also carries wider implications for City’s league position as the result leaves the Romans in the relegation zone with the season entering its final stages, meaning the threat of relegation is becoming an increasing concern.
