Late Slough strike sends City to painful home defeat
A late Slough Town strike condemned City to a single-goal defeat at Cannon Clarke Stadium @ Twerton Park this evening.
An early chance for the visitors saw Walker sting the gloves of Charlie Binns after six minutes. Ten minutes later Slough keeper Marriott produced a stunning save to deny Alex Fisher. These were rare efforts on goal as both sides struggled to impose themselves on the game. Late in the half City spurned a great chance to go ahead. A swift break from a Slough corner saw Luke Skinner send Jordan Alves clear but his heavy first touch allowed Marriott to gather the ball.
A penalty shout seven minutes into the second half, when Mitch Beardmore was tripped by the keeper, was negated by an offside flag. Walker against tested Binns on 64 minutes, Clarke blazing the loose ball over the bar. An unmarked Matt Bowman couldn’t get his header on target three minutes later. The deadlock was finally broken with eight minutes left when a long ball forward saw Makowski get in front of Kieran Parselle and lift a shot over Binns. Into stoppage time Ruebin Sheppard crashed a shot against the bar. The final action of the game was a huge goalmouth scramble in the Slough six-yard box but City couldn’t find a decisive touch to avoid a defeat.
