Time catches up with City as Bluebirds grab last gasp winner
Chippenham Town ended a 20-year wait for a win over City at Hardenhuish Park thanks to a 95th minute goal this afternoon. Moments after it looked like Jordan Alves’ stunning free-kick had rescued a point for City, Chukwu crashed home a close range shot to secure a third win of the season for the bottom-placed Bluebirds.
After an even opening to the contest it was City who broke the deadlock on 14 minutes when Owen Windsor was sent clear down the left by Brad Ash and confidently slid the ball past Henry. Lifted by this City took control of the game and came close to increasing their lead on several occasions. They suffered a blow on 34 minutes though when Harry Pell was forced off with an injury. Chippenham levelled on 39 minutes in fortunate circumstances. Parsons’ shot was heading well wide but was diverted into the net via the face of an oblivious Carroll.
The second half got off to the worst possible start for City as two minutes in former Roman Wanjau-Smith theatrically went to ground under a Jack Batten challenge but it was enough to convince the referee to award a penalty. Parsons didn’t need help from a teammate’s face this time, sending Wiles-Richards the wrong way from the spot. City were still struggling to recapture their earlier form and it looked like this would be enough to decide the game. However, as the game ticked into stoppage time City won a free-kick 20-yards out and Alves stepped up to curl the ball beyond Henry. This wasn’t enough to earn a point though as Wanjau-Smith earned another free-kick near the corner flag and Bradbury’s delivery caused havoc in the City box before Chukwu blasted the ball home.
