Ex-Roman Britton double sends City to late Weston defeat
A brace from ex-City striker Louis Britton – the second in stoppage time – saw City go down 2-1 against title-chasing Weston Super Mare at The Optima Stadium this evening.
After a cagey opening to the game it was City who began to gain the upper hand midway through the first half. On 21 minutes Brad Ash fired a great chance wide from a Will Jenkins Davies pull-back. Five minutes later Jordan Alves beat several Weston players before hitting a low shot that keeper Harris couldn’t hold but Avery blocked Luke Russe’s goal bound follow-up effort. After this little flurry the game settled back into it previous low-key pattern, although City had one close escape late in the half when Danny Greenslade’s attempt clearance hit Dawes only to rebound kindly for Harvey Wiles-Richards.
The Seagulls had shown few signs of their excellent start to the season in the opening 45 minutes but they flew out of the blocks after the break. Within 30 seconds of the restart the ball broke to Britton but he could only crash a shot against the post. City were having to defend deep in their own half and the pressure finally told on 57 minutes as Smith crossed for Britton to head home. City responded well to this blow and began to get back on top, although Weston continued to pose a threat on the break. The equaliser arrived in the 83rd minute when Greenslade’s cross found its way to Jenkins Davies to stab the ball home at the back post. However, it was the home side who grabbed the win two minutes into stoppage time when a corner was poked into the net by Britton from a couple of yards out.
