Jenkins Davies stunner can’t prevent Wimborne FA Cup exit

City fell at the first hurdle in this season’s FA Cup competition this afternoon, going down 2-1 to Southern League Premier Division Wimborne Town at The Wyatt Homes Stadium.

The Romans began the game brightly with Will Jenkins Davies bringing a smart stop from home keeper Plain after 10  minutes. The Magpies soon began pose City problems at the back though, Harvey Wiles-Richards denying Fletcher and Ryan in quick succession. However, he was beaten on 25 minutes when an unmarked McQuoid headed home. City thought they had levelled three minutes later when Luke Russe’s curling shot hit the bar and Alex Fisher slide home the rebound but an offside flag halted the celebrations. City then gifted Wimborne a second goal as Williams reached Russe’s back pass ahead of Wiles-Richards and fired into the open net.

Any attempt for City to build up momentum in the second half was regularly disrupted by home players going down injured, although when they were on their feet they occasionally threatened a third goal to put the game to bed. Out of nothing, with twelve minutes left, City grabbed a lifeline as Jenkins Davies picked up the ball 25 yards out before firing past Plain. Hopes of an unlikely comeback were lifted when the referee indicated 11 minutes of additional time but despite a series of free-kicks and long-throws only a Kieran Parselle header that flew over ever threatened to deny Wimborne a deserved place in the 3rd Qualifying Round.
