Match Preview – Wimborne Town (A) – FA Cup 2nd Qualifying Round
City turn their attention to the Emirates FA Cup this Saturday as they travel to Wimborne Town for a 2nd Qualifying Round tie.
PREVIOUS MEETINGS
The only past encounter between the two is one to forget for Bath City. In arguably the club’s most embarrassing result in their history, Wimborne Town knocked the Romans out of the FA Cup 3rd Qualifying Round in 1982 despite playing four divisions lower. Billy Cannie’s goal in the 5th minute was enough for the Western League Division One side to oust Alliance Premier City.
TRIVIA
- Wimborne made round one that year, losing to Division Four Aldershot. They’ve not progressed as far since.
- Their defeat at the Rec was just after losing to Bath City Reserves in a league match, played five weeks after City’s first team lost at Cuthbury.
- City recovered to finish 10th, Wimborne ended up 7th, six points clear of Bath City Reserves.
- Saturday is Darren Way’s first cup game in charge of Bath City.
- Wimborne have been knocked out of the FA Cup by National League South opponents in each of the last two years – Weston-super-Mare and Torquay United – but defeated Maidstone United in 2020 on penalties.
FORM
- Wimborne, plying their trade a division below in Southern Premier South, reached this stage by hammering Bishops Cleeve 5-2. Their 1-0 defeat at Gosport Borough on Wednesday night was their first since the opening day.
- Bath City are unbeaten away in seven since March, but winless in four following Saturday’s 0-0 draw at Chesham United. Last year’s FA Cup run took in wins over Merthyr Town and Salisbury before a 4th Qualifying Round last gasp loss at Aldershot Town.
