Second half comeback sees City secure sixth successive victory

Bath City Women recovered from an early scare to record a sixth straight win in all competitions.

Matt Abreu’s side fell behind in the 12th minute against bottom of the table Brislington when Rhianna Ben-Carew’s cross from the right saw Lucy Clay collide with Nell Bloomfield in trying to collect, causing her to spill with Libby Sims tapping the loose ball home. City recovered to enjoy large spells of possession without being at their fluent best, though Bex Fry and Jasmine Rennie both struck the crossbar. Sims tested Clay’s goalframe with a terrific free-kick which hit the top of the woodwork, before Abby Gray also nodded against the bar with Emma Vilday scuffing the follow-up in the final chance of the half.

City finally made the breakthrough on 53 minutes when Maddy Brown’s corner saw Bloomfield head home from close range through a crowd of bodies. Home keeper Kia Houghton did well to clutch Adella Clarke’s effort underneath the crossbar but was powerless to prevent a second midway through the half. This time it was a Tara Taylor corner doing the damage, substitute Rosie Burridge forcefully nodding into the roof of the net. Having penned Brislington back, the Romans finally found a third in the 89th minute when Beth Edwards found room inside the area to roll past Houghton and secure all three points. The conclusion was marred following a serious injury to Clodagh Moran in added time, later confirmed as a broken wrist, in a sad ending to an otherwise excellent afternoon for the visitors.
