Late drama as City and Farnborough share the points
City and Farnborough shared the points this afternoon in a 2-2 draw at the Saunders Transport Community Stadium. The game looked to be heading for a largely uneventful 1-1 draw before late drama. City thought they had won it when Joe Raynes fired home in the 88th minute but the hosts levelled from the penalty spot three minutes later, and it took an incredible Harvey Wiles-Richards save in the final minute to maintain the Romans unbeaten away league record this season.
City were caught cold after just three minutes when Collis was allowed too much space down the right and his curling shot flew past Wiles-Richards. It took a while for City to settle after this setback but as the half progressed they began to pose an attacking threat. Just past the half hour mark Scott Wilson latched onto a mistake but saw his attempted lob lack the height to beat Turner. Two minutes later Brad Ash managed to fashion a shooting chance despite a defender’s attempt to pull him down but Turner blocked the effort.
City began the second half on the front foot with Luke Russe and Kieran Parselle both going close to levelling. On 55 minutes the deserved equaliser arrived when Russe whipped the ball into the box where Ash got the vital touch to divert it past Turner. They couldn’t build on this though, as Farnborough fashioned a number of half-chances without really troubling Wiles-Richards. But when Raynes collected a clearance 20 yards out before cutting inside and placing a left-foot shot past Turner it looked like the points were headed back West. However, in the first minute of stoppage time Young was fouled just inside the box and Poleon struck home the penalty. The home side then had two great chances to win the game. Poleon raced clear but was forced wide by Wiles-Richards who then blocked his shot. Moments later a Farnborough corner caused havoc in the City box but Wiles-Richards pulled off a stunning one-handed save to ensure the points would be shared.
