Last gasp Rennie strike caps stunning Paulton comeback

Trailing 3-1 with just over 20 minutes left against Paulton Rovers at Cannon Clarke Stadium @ Twerton Park, City produced a remarkable comeback which was capped by Jasmine Rennie’s 96th minute winning goal.

The visitors came into the game at the foot of the Shield Services Group SW Regional WFL Div 1 N table and when Maddy Brown hooked home after 23 minutes it looked like City would take control of the game. However, moments after they struck the bar from a free-kick, Mitchell raced clear to lift the ball past Lucy Clay and ensure the match would be level at the break.

And City were left stunned within six minutes of the restart as Paulton struck twice. First a corner caused havoc in the City six-yard box with the ball finding the net via last touch by Rennie. Then a poor clearance by Clay allowed Ford to loft a shot into the goal. It took a while for City to recover from this double blow but on 68 minutes Phoebe Walls reacted quickest to make it 3-2 with a rising shot. With eleven minutes left City were back level when a perfect pass over the top by Bex Fry sent Tara Taylor clear and she confidently slotted the ball past the keeper. City had an escape moments later when a shot hit the inside of the post – Abby Gray producing a great block from the rebound. The comeback was completed deep in stoppage time when Erin Duffy battled to the by-line and set herself before picking out Rennie to side-foot home and spark jubilant celebrations.
