City push league leaders all the way in five-goal Twerton Park thriller
Despite twice leading Bath City Women were beaten 3-2 by league leaders Corsham Town this afternoon at Cannon Clarke Stadium @ Twerton Park.
City opened the scoring after 13 minutes when Bex Fry’s ball forward found Tara Taylor down the right flank. With Corsham keeper Lewis caught in no-mans land, City’s captain lifted the ball over her for Beth Edwards to divert it home from close range. The lead only last two minutes. Lucy Clay did brilliantly to block Nolan’s initial shot but the ball rebounded perfectly for Lyons to net from 10 yards. City regained their lead just past the half hour mark when Sophie Storey’s corner curled straight into the goal.
City were good value for their half-time lead but the visitors upped their game after the break and levelled again on 59 minutes. Nolan’s great reverse pass saw Lyons touch the ball past Clay and it had just enough power to beat Abby Gray’s attempt to clear it on the line. Three minutes later Corsham went ahead for the first time when Clay allowed Banfield’s 25-yard free-kick to slip through her grasp into the net. City pushed for an equaliser but the league leaders stood firm – even after Hopkins was sinbinned for dissent in the closing minutes – to secure a hard-fought three points.
