City hit Whitchurch for six to make MJM Sports League Cup progress

Bath City Women recovered from 2-0 and 3-1 down to overcome Whitchurch Ladies 6-3 in the MJM Sports League Cup this afternoon.

The hosts took an 8th minute lead through Hannah Gillett, who skipped around Lucy Clay’s desperate dive before calmly converting. It was doubled five minutes later when Jessica Taylor’s long drop-kick was misjudged by Rosie Burridge, and Faith Constable took full advantage by drilling superbly across Clay into the bottom corner. City replied on 21 minutes when Bex Fry’s pass over the top was collected by Tara Taylor, who squared for Maddy Brown to ram home from close range. Ilarna Nche made it 3-1 to the hosts when her persistence saw her get the better of Sophie Storey on the byline, who inadvertently deflected her cross over Clay despite desperate attempts on the line from the Romans defence. Jasmine Rennie rounded off the scoring in an action-packed first half when she brilliantly controlled Eve Trivett’s ball forward, held off a defender and fired home from 12 yards.

A third arrived just after half-time when Fry worked a one-two near the edge of the box and her thunderous strike flew into the roof of the net to leave Jessica Taylor helpless. The keeper was left red-faced five minutes later when she failed to collect Tara Taylor’s cross, batting it straight onto the head of Emma Vilday who gleefully nodded City in front for the first time. A fine Clay save from Kelly Dadds kept City ahead before Matt Abreu’s team added their fifth just past the hour. Tara Taylor’s low corner was cleverly flicked by Clodagh Moran to Burridge, who fired in her first goal for the club from close range. Substitute Moran also netted her maiden Romans goal with a perfectly placed curler from inside the box to wrap up a stunning turnaround against a strong side.
