Match Report by Mark Stillman.

Bath City Women made it back-to-back wins after a narrow success over Downend Flyers.

First half goals from Maddy Brown and Bex Fry were enough for Matt Abreu’s team.

Yasmine West pulled one back for the Bristol-based side but it proved to just be a consolation.

The win moves City up to second ahead of a three week hiatus.

Brown, scorer of two at home to Downend last year, opened her account for this season on 12 minutes.

Jess Evans’ ball from the left was met by the toe of the City striker, whose effort appeared to be brilliantly clawed out by Aimee Glover but it crept over the line via the post before Adella Clarke had made sure regardless.

Ffion Robinson looped just over for Flyers before they were rocked by a fine second goal from the hosts.

Fry worked a one-two with Tara Taylor across the edge of the box, moved away from Harriet Giles and fired into the bottom left corner away from Glover – her first goal for the club.

Manager Abreu made four changes swiftly after, as Downend pulled one back with an eye-catching goal of their own.

Robinson’s through ball picked out West wide of the penalty area and she precisely side-footed home off the base of the post to give Lucy Clay no chance.

Flyers should have equalised just after half-time.

Ellie Brockton dispossessed Katie Davies and squared to Robinson, who was initially halted by Clay before Davies made amends to put the follow-up behind for a corner.

Robinson was denied by Abby Gray’s vital intervention after the ball squirmed beyond Clay.

Poppy Spratt drilled into the side-netting after Taylor’s cross deflected back to her and Koz Thorner-Atkinson’s volley was comfortably gathered by the diving Glover.

City had a strong penalty appeal turned down when Taylor’s delivery appeared to be handled by Grace Smith but referee Kelvin Day was unmoved.

Katharine Briggs missed a golden opportunity to snatch a draw in added time but she wastefully volleyed Giles’ header across goal over as the Romans breathed a sigh of relief to claim a second successive home success.
