A4 Derby honours go to Romans thanks to Binns and Wilson

City grabbed the A4 Derby honours in the most dramatic fashion this afternoon with Scott Wilson’s 93rd minute goal securing a 1-0 win over Chippenham Town at Cannon Clarke Stadium @ Twerton Park.

Whilst Wilson will be the headline maker it was goalkeeper Charlie Binns who produced a man-of-the-match performance with a string of superb saves to allow the City no.9 his last gasp heroics. The tone was set as early as the 4th minute as Binns got down well to divert a deflected cross behind for a corner. Chukwu was then denied on twelve minutes before former Roman Mehew’s shot for the edge of the box was turned over the bar by Binns. City were very much second best during this opening half-hour but began to get a foothold in the game during the latter stages of the half. A smart break down the right saw Jaiden Putman’s cross well gathered by Henry on 29 minutes. Donovan Wilson appeared to be pulled back as he got a shot away five minutes before the interval. The half ended with Joe Raynes testing Henry with a well-struck 25-yard shot.

Into the second half the contest was a more even affair, although the Bluebirds continued to pose the greater attacking threat. They had penalty appeals waved away on 55 minutes after Bradbury went to ground under Putman’s challenge. The same player then shot into the side-netting before Jordan Alves suffered a similar fate from a deflected shot. Midway through the half an offside looking Chukwu raced clear but was denied by Binns. Five minutes later the City shot-stopper was again at his best to keep out Haines’ shot. With a point of little use to either side in their relegation battle they both pushed for a breakthrough. In the final minute of the game City thought they had found it when Donovan Wilson sent his cousin clear on goal but his shot came back off the foot of the post. However, four minutes later he was teed up again, by Owen Windsor’s perfect cross, and this time slotted the ball past Henry to send Twerton Park into rapture.
