Does anyone know if we would have had enough money in the budget for one of Adie's target men if we had not signed Browning?

Yes, I know this is not constructive, but there are an awful lot of people out here who are as unhappy as me, in that, yet again, management have seen fit to 'start at the back', and then not have enough money to pay for any new strikers (to date).

As Rob has just mentioned, we may 'grind' out enough results to finish mid-table, but the most important point is that we are probably not going to score enough goals, let alone play the exciting football, that will bring attendances back to the required level that will be needed to maintain the wages of any new loanee(s), financed in the way suggested by this thread, in future years.

Some players cost more than others; doubtless we could have signed a league 1 striker if we'd chucked the whole budget at it.As it is, Adie has to produce a squad that is balanced and strong enough in numbers and quality to see us through a demanding season.
I've not seen Browning but have no doubt in Adie's judgement on him which will have been formed on the basis of a cost benefit analysis.
Yes, we need a striker....there is probably enough in the budget to get a 10-15 goal a year man.To get a 20+ man we have to find that bit extra.I've chipped in my pledge in the belief that I'll enjoy the season so much more if we get the best available striker. Please join me and give the squad a really good chance of success...you'll know you'll enjoy that bit

while i've not been convinced about browning in pre-season matches, britton said he would only sign if it fitted in with the budget so i can't see why his arrival will have any effect on what we can afford for a striker

as the bear says we could have a squad of 18 year olds on £20 a week and afford a striker way above this level (assuming he's want to play for us) but that hardly makes sense

agreed, but as stevie points out, and adie stated at the 'meet the manager', defensive organisation is the priority. i see nothing wrong with that, but the bottom line is that the new season kicks off in less than a fortnight and the only strikers we have are those who scored just 19 league goals between them last season. perhaps ensuring we had adequate cover in defence and midfield should not have been seen as such a priority as strengthening the attack. of course, the alternative may have been to release one or both of those strikers to release more funds.
i agree with you that on the basis of what we have seen in the friendlies (and they are no yardstick!), the defence looks as good as always and the midfield should be more incisive. however, we have watched many games where we have dominated but failed to kill teams off...

I don't think anyone who watches city would fail to agree that we need another striker or two.The question is, what kind of a striker do we want....there is money in the budget for a striker....but not an absolutely top drawer man at this level....just a bit extra and we could get a superb striker....trust Adie's ability to get the right man and let the moths loose if you possibly can....

a striker capable of taking the chances squandered in the recent friendlies would be a start. geoff boycott's mum would have put some of those away - we're not talking superb or top drawer!

Trouble is, even Gilly missed a lot of chances. Not all strikers are as gifted as Boycotts granny or her redoubtable daughter.A consistent finisher, as powell so often says, can be forgiven some shortcomings in other areas....if he is a 30 goal a year man.Would Birdy have bagged a brace on Sunday....quite likely I'd suggest.

While I am often in support Adie's judgement of players, I do think he was wrong in not signing Birdy, who wouldn't be on bags of money, would bring experience and can always be relied upon for a goal. :angry7:

Is Birdy registered with another club at the moment? Is he is training?

Having said that he might well have found the net on Sunday against one of his former clubs, let's not forget that Sam Elbows, the vicious Chippnumb forward once scored 4 for us in a pre season friendly. When the season starts for real will be the time to judge our strikers.

Yes he is at Mangotsfield as one of their front stikers they have offered him more money than we could.

I bet he bags 20 goals this season.

If Daz hadn't got injured at the tail end of the season, you'd have been buying the pints powell. :crybaby:
